A Journey Beyond the Classroom: Helix House Explores Vietnam with Southeast Asian Friendship Initiative (SFI)

From 20 to 29 May 2026, Helix House residents embarked on a transformative journey to Hanoi, Vietnam as part of the Southeast Asian Friendship Initiative (SFI2044). The 10-day trip offered students a unique blend of cultural immersion, multidisciplinary learning, and some unforgettable experiences.

Students explored places and experiences new to them, such as the vibrant streets of Hanoi, and the stunning blend of emerald waters, dramatic limestone karsts, and unspoiled natural beauty of Cat Ba. Each destination brought new insights. Visits to the Bat Trang Ceramic Village and GAEA upcycling Village highlighted sustainable practices, while lectures at Vietnam National University deepened understanding of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) like clean energy, responsible consumption, and quality education.

For many, the trip offered a fresh perspective. Tu WeiZhi and Tan Rui Hao gained a deeper appreciation of Vietnam's environmental initiatives through its waste-to-energy solutions Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex. Nguyen Tue Vy reflected on how everyday choices contribute to environmental outcomes, appreciating the importance of responsible consumption and sustainable living. Jin Khai gained a deeper appreciation for community-driven sustainability through the inspiring efforts of local youth at the GAEA Upcycling Village, where waste is creatively transformed into valuable products. Daryl Poh learned about the importance of biodiversity conservation, gaining a deeper understanding of the ongoing efforts to protect Cat Ba Island's unique ecosystems amid increasing tourism.

The SFI trip featured a range of memorable experiences, including pottery-making, a visit to the Nam Son Waste Processing Complex, an exploration of biodiversity conservation efforts at Cat Ba National Park, and insights into sustainable energy production at the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant. Through these immersive experiences, participants gained valuable perspectives on sustainability, environmental stewardship, and cultural exchange while reflecting on their own role in shaping a more sustainable future.
