Conversation Series: Health Talk — Uncovering Misconceptions about Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
On 18 August 2026, Helix House organised the first edition of the Conversation Series, a health talk about Human Papillomavirus (HPV). In this session, we had the privilege of inviting A/Prof Derrick Aw Chen Wee, a dermatologist and physician at Sengkang General Hospital, who provided an extremely insightful talk on the virus.
The health talk was of great relevance to the residents, as the speaker shared that HPV is most common amongst males aged 20 to 29, and females aged 20 to 24, closely reflecting our residents’ demographics. At the same time, the Master of Helix House, A/Prof Lee Kooi Cheng, mentioned that such talks have been highly requested by participants from previous editions of the Conversation Series.
The speaker went on to share that HPV is considered a global endemic, responsible for a growing number of diseases like genital warts, as well as cancers such as cervical and vulvar cancer. He also explained how the virus can be transmitted along with its implications, before emphasising that it is a wide-ranging virus, from being asymptomatic to deadly, and from curable to incurable. Before concluding his sharing, he encouraged everyone to be vaccinated against HPV, so as to protect themselves from the virus.
