Dialogue in the Dark: Seeing the World Differently

Dialogue in the Dark: Seeing the World Differently

On 23 September, Helix House residents embarked on a meaningful and eye-opening journey at Ngee Ann Polytechnic for Dialogue in the Dark. Through a series of interactive activities, we explored what it means to navigate the world without sight and gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of empathy, patience and reassurance when interacting with the visually impaired.

We first took part in activities that challenged us to rely on our other senses and communicate effectively with one another. From being blindfolded and drawing a picture based solely on our friends’ instructions, to navigating a room without sight and lining up according to our heights or birthdays, even seemingly simple tasks became surprisingly challenging. These activities gave us a small glimpse into how unfamiliar and uneasy everyday situations can feel when we cannot rely on our vision.

The highlight of the experience was undoubtedly the guided tour through a completely pitch-black environment. With our vision taken away, we had to rely entirely on our other senses as we navigated through different everyday settings. We experienced what it was like to walk through a nature park, cross a road, explore a tourist attraction, purchase something at a café and even “watch” a movie without being able to see. What stood out most was discovering how many things visually impaired individuals are able to do independently and confidently with the right skills, tools and support.

More than simply helping us understand what it is like to live without sight, Dialogue in the Dark reminded us to look beyond our assumptions about what others can or cannot do.. It showed us the importance of patience, clear communication and empathy, while also highlighting the independence and capabilities of the visually impaired community. As Helixians, we left the experience with a renewed appreciation for seeing the world from perspectives different from our own. And a reminder that sometimes, understanding begins when we take a step outside of our own point of view.

A memorable journey that reminds Helixians to look beyond appearances and embrace differences.
