Singapore’s Melting Pot of Religions – A trip to the Harmony in Diversity Gallery

Singapore’s Melting Pot of Religions: A trip to the Harmony in Diversity Gallery

Just how much do you know about the various religions in Singapore and how they each contribute to our country’s continued development? On 17th September, Helixians took a trip down to the Harmony in Diversity Gallery (HDG) to learn more about our rich religious diversity, giving us an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding into our home’s melting pot of religions.

The gallery showed that religious diversity can be a double-edged sword, and how our rich diversity could be a source of united strength as well as a source of friction. The exhibit on the Maria Hertogh riots examines the dangers of a lack of interfaith understanding, and emphasises the importance of finding a common ground to foster mutual respect between different religions.

Singapore’s numerous common spaces promote an abundance of interfaith interactions and allow diverse places of worship to coexist peacefully. The exhibits here enlightens us on how we can play a part in protecting such spaces in order to maintain religious harmony.

Although we were unable to go on a walking trail due to poor weather, we have nonetheless gained valuable takeaways from this trip. Just like how our DNA binds us, the values of connection and camaraderie are just as crucial in our interfaith society as they are to us, and we can all play a part in maintaining the harmony that makes us one people.
